おしゃべりコップ・Chattering Cup

川崎氏の本、P211におしゃべりコップを見つけたとき、2005年の悲しい体験を思い出しました。PCOC（Pacific Coast Origami USA Conference）の折図作成に、少しばかりお手伝いをした際、諸々の予期せぬ事情から、鈴木恵美子さんの作「おしゃべりコップ」の折図に大きなミスが生じたまま、折図集が作成されてしまったことです。

もちろん、川崎氏の折図は正しい折図で、鈴木さんが望んでおられる茶目っ気のある唇に仕上がります。

When I found Japanese creator, Emiko Suzuki's "Chattering Cup" in Kawasaki's new book, it reminded me of an unpleasant experience back in 2005 when I volunteered to help with Pacific Coast Origami USA Conference's (PCOC) origami book.  Although we diligently worked together as volunteers, an unexpected mistake in the directions for "Chattering Cup" was overseen and incorrectly published.  For this reason, I was very happy to see that the correct directions were published in Kawasaki's book.

幸い、日米言語にて、このブログを書くようにしましたので、左の折図集を持っておられる方は、作者から訂正の手紙を頂いたものを、ここに掲載しますので、どうぞ、正しい折り方を学んでください。折図集P102 Chattering Cupを開いてください。

Now that I started writing my blog in English and Japanese, I want to take this opportunity to inform everyone of Ms. Suzuki's corrections so that everyone knows the right directions.  If you have this book, please open page 102 and note these following corrections I received from Ms. Suzuki:

[Step 2]  Should not fold, just make a pinch mark.

                Do not make a crease all the way to the end.

[Step 9]  When making the crease, stop at the center (at the top of the mountain shape).

[Step 10] Please stop the crease at the center, as in Illustration 9 on the upper lip. 

                (The illustration for this step is missing!)

[Step 11] Do not change the lip shape.  The upper lip should not be rounded.

[Step 12] Do not illustrate the edge of the lip as a rounded shape;

                the same mistake as Illustration 11.

[Step 13] Do not make a vertical line on the upper layer paper (this will be lower lip).

[Step 14] Please add this explanation on the illustrations as follows:

Make a vertical line, but only on the upper lip

    -The upper lip will look real if you make a vertical line
    -Because right now, the lips look very crooked, and seems as if the person is mad.

Flying Heart ・愛の翼に乗って

川崎氏の新しい本の中に、”Flying Heart・愛の翼に乗って”というフランシス・オウさんの大好きなモデルを見つけた時、飛び上がらんばかりの驚きでした。皆さん、ご存知のようにフランシス・オウさんは、世界的に有名なハート作家で、１００種類余りのハート作品を創作した方です。

It was a surprise to me when I saw my favorite heart model created by Francis Ow in Kawasaki’s new book.  This model is called “Flying Heart.”  Francis Ow is an internationally known origami heart creator.  He has probably created almost a hundred heart models.

数ある彼のハートの中で、このFlying　Heartが一番好きで、毎年、バレンタインデーには、たくさん折って、大勢の友人や家族に贈っています。ところで、川崎氏の折図に従って、赤いハートを折ってみました。オウさんの英語版の本に書かれた折図で折ったのは、ピンクです。このピンクの紙は、Origamit社のアメリカンホイル折り紙です。

Out of all of his models, I like “Flying Heart” the most.  I made many of them and sent it to my family and friends for Valentine’s Day, like I do every year.  I made some of them in red, following Kawasaki’s directions, and some of them in pink, following Francis’s directions in the English version of her book.  The pink one, as shown in the picture, is folded using American foil paper, available for purchase through Origamist. 

この二つのハートを折ってみて気が付いたのですが、互いに違いがあるのです。羽を見ていただくと、良くお分かりでしょう。また、裏を見ていただくと、はっきりとその違いが分かります。 きっと、どちらも、オウさんの”Flying Heart・愛の翼に乗って”なのでしょう。

個人的には、私は、翼３枚の方が好きです。こちらは、盛り上がりがない分、収まりが良く、また、折り方も簡単です。しかし、羽を３枚作る部分が、最初は分からず、少々手間取りましたがねぇ。。

After folding the two models, I found that there are differences between the two models. You can see in the pictures that the wings are completely different from one another.  By looking at the back of the heart, you can recognize the difference more clearly.  I assume that there may be two versions of Francis Ow’s “Flying Heart.”  Personally, I like the model with three wings because this model lays flat and it is easier to fold, even though it will take a little time to understand the direction when making the wings. 

Mrtn Directoryさんの２００７年１月７日に記事でも、川崎氏の折図は、蛇腹折りの厚みで、ハートが少し浮き上がっています。羽が多い分、私のハートは、浮かれていま～すということなのでしょうね。

Organ

The next book I’d like to introduce is Toshikazu Kawasaki’s Hakaseno Origami Yume-Book (A Professor’s Origami Dream Book).  I put it on my blog’s side menu, hoping to get it one day; it took me by surprise when I received it as a gift after mentioning it to a friend. 

Mr. Kawasaki includes in his book, not only his original models, but also the traditional and even his personal favorite.  I found this book fascinating; I was so memorized by the book that I’d completely forgotten about the folding aspect of origami.

When I came upon the Organ model, I had flashbacks of my childhood, about fifty years ago in Japan; I think folding the Organ was one of the first experiences I had with origami in my life.  When I sometimes taught origami to children after I moved to the U.S., I always called this model, Piano.  But after looking at this book, I realized this model is not at piano at all, but in fact an organ.  My reunion with this Organ model, brought back memories of an organ that used to be in my classroom as a school girl; I remember having admiration for my teacher back then.

And one more thing… I noticed that the model I am familiar with (the piano with the keyboard drawn in) is a little different than the original.  If you compare the two models, the part where the keyboard would be on the piano model is folded over in half; I can’t recall whether I’d always folded it this way, or if I’d adopted this later on in my life.  My guess is that the Piano model was a modification of the Organ model, something that came about with the decreasing popularity and use of organs.

オルガン

次に購入する折り紙の本は、川崎敏和氏の「博士の折り紙夢BOOK」かなぁと、購入期待感もあり、サイドメニューにこの本の紹介をしていましたが、まだ、購入していないとある人に洩らしたら、先週、プレゼントに頂きました。

博士、川崎氏のオリジナルだけでなく、川崎氏が選ばれた懐かしい作品、お気に入りの作品が紹介されていて、いつもの如く、折ることより本を眺めて、しばし、至福の時を過ごしておりました。

と同時に、その中に、このオルガンがあり、幼い頃の思い出にも、浸っていました。私が、最初に出合った折り紙ではないかと思うのです。幼稚園で習ったという記憶があるので、もう、かれこれ、５０年以上も昔のことです。

それに、近頃、折り紙を教えるようになって、「ピアノ」と紹介していたのですが、そう、ホント！にオルガンだったと気づかせてもらいました。５０年前、学校の教室にあったのは、オルガンで、上手にオルガンを弾く先生に憧れたものです。

それと、もう一つ気が付いたのは、私が現在、折っているオルガンは、鍵盤付きで、オルガンから格上げされた確かにピアノと呼ぶに相応しいものです。何時頃から、このように折っているのか分かりません。オリジナルのオルガンの水平部分を二つ折りにして、鍵盤を描き足しています。

時代の流れと共に、オルガン(空気を送り込むためのぺダルがあり、ぺダルを踏みながら弾くのです）が世の中なら姿を消して、ピアノを一般家庭でも手に入れられる時代が訪れた頃ではなかったでしょうか。
